Effect of body size heterogeneity on the aggressive behavior of larvae of matrinxã, Brycon amazonicus (Characiformes, Bryconidae) Acta Amazonica
CARVALHO,Thaís Billalba; SOUZA,Ellen Cristina Monteiro de; PINHEIRO-DA-SILVA,Jaquelinne; VILLACORTA-CORREA,Marle Angélica.
ABSTRACT Brycon amazonicus is a native Amazonian fish that is important for aquaculture in South America. Larval mortality is high in this species in intensive breeding systems due to aggressiveness among larvae. The present study investigated experimentally the effects of body size heterogeneity on the aggressive behavior and survival of B. amazonicus during the early stages of larval development. Two treatments (larvae groups with homogeneous and heterogeneous body size) were evaluated throughout early larval stages tested at six time points: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 hours after hatching (HAH). Two experiments quantified, respectively, aggressive interactions and mortality rates among larvae at each time point. The frequency of aggressive interactions...

Effect of different concentrations of protein on the digestive system of juvenile silver catfish Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Melo,J.F.B.; Lundstedt,L.M.; Moraes,G.; Inoue,L.A.K.A..
Aspects of digestion in juvenile silver catfish Rhamdia quelen fed with four levels of protein (20, 27, 34 and 41%) were studied. The studied traits were digestive enzymes (nonspecific proteases, trypsin, chymotrypsin, amylase and lipase) and weight gain. The experiment lasted 60 days; 160 juvenile catfish with initial body weight of 32 grams were transferred to the experimental system of 500L tanks with re-circulated and thermostatized water. The average weight of silver catfish increased with dietary protein and 41% of crude protein (CP) was accepted as the best one. Gastric protease activity increases with the CP level. The intestinal alkaline protease reached the peak at 27% CP and the highest activities were observed in the anterior section of the gut...

Effect of ecological and biological factors on the uptake and concentration of trace elements by aquatic organisms at Edku lake OceanDocs
Abbas, M.M.; Shakweer, L..
The effect of temperature, pH and trace elements concentration in the ambient water on the uptake and accumulation of Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb in various organs of fish and parts of aquatic plants of Edku Lake were studied. It was found that higher water temperature and lower pH during summer increased the rates of trace metals uptake by the most common fish species Oreochromis niloticus. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Ni in the various organs of fish were affected by the concentrations of these elements in the water. Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb attained higher concentrations in the roots of Eichormia crassipes if compared with their concentrations in the other parts of this aquatic plant. Sex of fish can be considered as an important factor affecting the accumulation...

Effect of high pressure on the calpain-calpastatin system in fish muscle ArchiMer
Cheret, Romuald; Delbarre Ladrat, Christine; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; De Lamballerie, Marie.
Calpains (calcium-activated neutral proteases) of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) muscle may participate in the degradation of muscle tissue during postmortem storage. These enzymes are regulated by calpastatin, their endogenous specific inhibitor. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes encountered by the calpain system during the postmortem storage of fish muscle after high-pressure treatment. From 100 MPa, high-pressure treatment of purified calpains results in a loss of their activity as well as in the dissociation of the heterodimeric form. In muscle, the high-pressure processing decreases the initial activity of calpain. This loss in activity may be due to an inactivation by a change of structure. Initial calpastatin activity is...

Effect of hypoxia on the activity and binding of glycolytic and associated enzymes in sea scorpion tissues BJMBR
Lushchak,V.I.; Bahnjukova,T.V.; Storey,K.B..
The effect of hypoxia on the levels of glycogen, glucose and lactate as well as the activities and binding of glycolytic and associated enzymes to subcellular structures was studied in brain, liver and white muscle of the teleost fish, Scorpaena porcus. Hypoxia exposure decreased glucose levels in liver from 2.53 to 1.70 µmol/g wet weight and in muscle led to its increase from 3.64 to 25.1 µmol/g wet weight. Maximal activities of several enzymes in brain were increased by hypoxia: hexokinase by 23%, phosphoglucoisomerase by 47% and phosphofructokinase (PFK) by 56%. However, activities of other enzymes in brain as well as enzymes in liver and white muscle were largely unchanged or decreased during experimental hypoxia. Glycolytic enzymes in all three...

Effect of temperature, volume of ova batches, and addition of a diluent, an antibiotic, oxygen and a protein inhibitor on short-term storage capacities of turbot, Psetta maxima, ova ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Chereguini, Olvido; Omnes, Marie-helene; Rasines, Inmaculada; Normant, Yvon; Souto, Isabel; Quemener, Loic.
The effect of different parameters on shea-term storage capacity of turbot ova was assessed over a 45-h period after ova collection for fertilization rates and over a 9-h period after ova collection for hatching rates. Increasing the volume of ova sampling from 0.5 to 2.5 mt, as well as adding an antibiotic-antimicotic solution or oxygen did not significantly change the storage capacity of ova. Regarding the hatching rates, a higher storage ability was recorded at 8 and 13 degrees C, compared to 3 degrees C. The mean composition of the ovarian fluid was determined (n = 57 spawns). Use of a diluent mimicking the ovarian fluid significantly decreased the storage ability as assessed by the fertilization rates but did not modify the hatching rates. Diluting...

Effects of betaine on the growth of the fish piauçu, Leporinus macrocephalus BABT
Normandes,Edivaldo Bento; Barreto,Rodrigo Egydio; Carvalho,Robson Francisco; Delicio,Helton Carlos.
In this study was tested the effect of betaine on the growth performance of the piauçu fish. For this, twenty-one fish (mean ± SD: body weight: 14.9 ± 1.3 g) were randomly distributed in one out of three experimental treatments (n = 7 each; 1 fish/aquarium): without betaine added in the food (control); 3.6 g betaine/Kg of food; 7.1 g betaine/Kg of food. The fish were exposed to experimental conditions for 60 days. Fish presented significant growth throughout experimentation, but no statistically significant difference was found for any parameter analyzed among the treatments, except for condition factor, which was higher in control group than betaine ones. Accordingly, it was concluded that betaine had no enhancing effect on growth of piauçu.

Effects of food deprivation in muscle structure and composition of traíra (Hoplias malabaricus): potential implications on flesh quality BABT
Rios,Flavia Sant'Anna; Donatti,Lucélia; Fernandes,Marisa Narciso; Kalinin,Ana Lucia; Rantin,Francisco Tadeu.
Hoplias malabaricus (traíra) were experimentally starved (0 to 240 days) and subsequently re-fed for 30 days (after 90 and 240-d fasting). Long-term starvation produced minor changes in muscle composition, but shrinkage of muscle fibres was a conspicuous result. The diameter of muscle fibres decreased gradually and the spaces among them increased as the starvation period progressed. After re-feeding, fish prior starved for 90 days presented partial restoration on diameter of muscle fibres. However, the fibres remained shrunken after re-feeding following 240-d fasting. While the lipid content did not change, the protein levels fell after 240-d fasting, but they were restored after re-feeding

Effects of high pressure on texture and microstructure of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) fillets ArchiMer
Cheret, Romuald; Chapleau, Nicolas; Delbarre Ladrat, Christine; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; De Lamballerie, Marie.
High pressure is an innovative non-thermal food-preservation technology. We studied the effect of high-pressure treatment up-to 500 MPa for 5 min on physical characteristics of sea bass fillets after 0, 7, and 14 d of refrigerated storage.. Color results exhibited an increase of lightness and a slight change of hue, which might be imperceptible in cooked fish. High-pressure treatment induced a decrease of exudation and water-holding capacity Pressure treatment above 300 MPa provoked higher fish hardness after storage than in untreated sample, proving the ability of high pressure to improve textural, quality of chilled, stored fish fillet. These assessments were corroborated with microstructure observations. We showed that high-pressure treatment at 500 MPa...

The effects of hot (45-90ºC/5 hours) and cold (27-45ºC/10 hours) smoking processes on the organoleptic properties, yield and composition of matrinxa (Brycon cephalus) fillets are evaluated. No significant differences were observed for fillet yield in both non-smoked and smoked fillets. Smoking process losses were significantly higher for hot smoked (19.37%) when compared to cold smoked (17.08%). Smoking process reduced moisture (in natura = 72.91%, for hot = 58.51% and cold = 59.68%) and increased crude protein, lipid and ash contents. However, there was a significant difference only for protein level between hot smoked (28.07%) and cold smoked (27.14%). Cold smoked process resulted in better fillet appearance and color, while hot smoked presented superior...

Effects of oil exposure and dispersant use upon environmental adaptation performance and fitness in the European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Claireaux, Guy; Theron, Michael; Prineau, Michel; Dussauze, Matthieu; Merlin, Francois Xavier; Le Floch, Stephane.
The worldwide increasing recourse to chemical dispersants to deal with oil spills in marine coastal ecosystems is a controversial issue. Yet, there exists no adequate methodology that can provide reliable predictions of how oil and dispersant-treated oil can affect relevant organism or population-level performance. The primary objective of the present study was to examine and compare the effects of exposure to untreated oil (weathered Arabian light crude oil), chemically dispersed oil (Finasol, TOTAL-Fluides) or dispersant alone, upon the ability of fish for environmental adaptation. To reach that goal, we implemented high-throughput, non-lethal challenge tests to estimate individual hypoxia and heat tolerance as surrogate measures of their capacity to...

Effects of the organophosphorous methyl parathion on the branchial epithelium of a freshwater fish Metynnis roosevelti BABT
Machado,Marcelo Rubens; Fanta,Edith.
Gills are vital structures for fish, since they are the main site for gaseous exchange as well as partially responsible for osmorregulation, acid-basic balance, excretion of nitrogenous compounds and taste. Chemicals in the water may alter the morphology of branchial cells of fish that are, therefore, a useful model for environmental impact and ecotoxicology studies. In order to investigate the effects of an organophosphorous compound, methyl parathion, on the gills of the fish, samples of Metynnis roosevelti were exposed to lethal (7ppm) and sublethal (1ppm) doses of Mentox 600 CE. Through light and scanning electron microscopy, shrinking of the branchial epithelium, followed by detachment and hyperplasia were observed. Externally, the branchial filaments...
